ASD is a so-called sectoral foreign trade company (sftc), founded in may 1999 by the 30 leading footwear manufacturers and 13 footwear components and accessories producers in Turkey. Today, ASD has 53 shareholders in total. Even though ASD is based in Istanbul, some shareholding companies are located in Anadolu. Sftc is an in foreign trade specialized organization founded by small or medium sized producers of the same industrial sector. Sftc's are being established by special permission of the undersecretary for foreign trade after meeting certain conditions set by a governmental decret and they are being audited by the same authority.
The main task of a sftc is to provide their shareholders with specific adventages in terms of legal rights, bigger market opportunity, interactive trading facility between the member companies and higher credit availability among the financial intitutions. The objective of ASD is mainly to increase the competiveness of its shareholders in global markets. For this purpose, ASD supports its shareholders to achieve economy of scale, to reduce operating costs, to solve financial problems, to eliminate disadvantages in foreign trade caused by lack of know-how or small scale, and to increase marketing effectiveness.
Among the shareholders of ASD are manufacturers of slippers, sandals, shoes, booties and boots for children, women and men. The products cover most every kind of footwear, a wide range of military/safety footwear, athletic shoes, casuals, comfort and fashion shoes. Moreover, other ASD shareholding companies offer footwear components and accessories like lasts, soles, heels, leather or synthetic linings, laces, adhesives etc. ASD is regularly participating in following shoe fairs: GDS Düsseldorf/Germany, MosShoes Moscow/Russia, MOTEXHA Dubai/UAE, APL Hong Kong. In November 2001, ASD has opened up its first ever large scale shoe store in Prague which will be followed shortly in other capital towns of Eastern European countries.
